Adolescence: What Is It?
Adolescence is the period of life that marks the transition from childhood to adulthood. It unfolds on the physical, psychological, and social levels.
Although early adolescence coincides with the onset of puberty, it is not limited to the effects of puberty; it is also a social construct influenced by cultural norms and the socio-educational environment. In industrialized countries, adolescence is generally considered to span the ages of 10 to 24, although this varies from person to person.
The changes that adolescents go through lead to a reshaping of their relationship with the world, with themselves, and with others. This period of transformation makes young people particularly vulnerable: their identity is still developing, and their points of reference are shifting. It is precisely this transitional instability that makes them more susceptible to certain risky behaviors.
In fact, adolescence is characterized in particular by a need to experiment, a search for thrills and novelty, as well as a (relatively) high level of risk-taking, such as through the use of tobacco products and/or nicotine products.
Brain Development
These physical and psychological changes involve the gradual remodeling of the brain. Throughout adolescence, the brain reorganizes its network of neural connections: it strengthens those most frequently used during experiences and learning, and prunes away those that are no longer needed. Positive experiences—such as taking on a new task, forming meaningful relationships, and learning—strengthen the neural circuits associated with emotional, social, and cognitive skills. Conversely, negative experiences (recurring or prolonged psychological stress, trauma) can hinder this development and compromise long-term mental health.
The prefrontal cortex, which regulates emotions, decision-making, and planning, is the last region of the brain to develop. Its immaturity may explain impulsivity as well as risk-taking at the expense of thoughtful decisions. The fact that the region of the brain involved in emotions, stress, and conditioning is remodeled earlier during puberty may explain why adolescents are more vulnerable to the neurotoxic effects of psychoactive substances than adults.
